Current research into mood disorders and their causes and treatments is showing there may be promise in the ketogenic therapy diet as treatment. CMHRC conducted a pilot research study in 2024 and 2025 looking at the use of ketogenic therapy in treating

bipolar disorder in children ages 6-17. Now, in 2026 we are beginning a new, long-term study, and are recruiting volunteer families with children ages 6-20, diagnosed with a mood disorder who are interested in attempting ketogenic therapy within a supportive community of participants. Our goal for this new study is to provide information, resources, and support to families using ketogenic therapy as a nutritional intervention for mood disorders in children and adolescents.

Over the past few years CMHRC's executive director, Elizabeth Errico, has hosted multiple webinars on the subject, all of which can be seen on the CMHRC YouTube channel. In one, Elizabeth spoke with Jan Ellison Baszucki and her son Matt, who shared with our community their family's personal story of sending bipolar disorder into remission using metabolic ketogenic therapy. In another webinar we hosted Dr. Bret Scher; cardiologist, medical director of Metabolic Mind, and a leading expert in metabolic therapies, including a ketogenic diet. They spoke together about the science behind ketogenic diets and how they support recovery from bipolar disorder. Another event included Dr. Georgia Ede, psychiatrist and author of the book Change Your Diet, Change Your Mind. Dr. Ede has been a pioneer in the field of metabolic therapies for decades. During her years at Smith College and Harvard University Health Services she was the first physician to offer nutrition-based therapies as an alternative to psychiatric medication. Finally, CMHRC presented the results of our recent pilot study on ketogenic therapy in Paris at the 9th Global Symposium on Ketogenic Therapy, and in a webinar to our community in October of 2025. If you are interested in participating in future ketogenic programs and studies you can fill out our interest survey or email us to share your interest today! There is no commitment at this time. We are looking for families with:
- Child(ren) aged 6-20
- Diagnoses of any mood disorder
- A willingness to change diet
