Who Is In Your Corner? Building Support Networks for Caregivers and Families |
Raising a child with a mood disorder, bipolar disorder, or another form of neurodivergence can be one of the more demanding journeys a family can take. The appointments, the medication adjustments, the school meetings, the sleepless nights all add up. At some point, in the middle of managing it all, many caregivers quietly realize they've been doing it mostly alone. |
That realization doesn't mean you've failed. It means it's time to build your corner. |
Why Caregiver Support Matters |
Research is clear: caregiver burnout is real, and it directly impacts the children and families that are working so hard to help. When the adults in a child's life are depleted, it becomes harder to respond with patience, to pay attention to symptom patterns, to advocate effectively at school, or to stay hopeful during a difficult stretch. Support isn't a luxury. It's part of an effective treatment plan. Yet, asking for help can feel complicated. Friends and extended family may not understand what life with a mood-affected child actually looks like. Some well-meaning people offer advice that lands wrong. Others fade away because they don't know what to say. The result is a kind of invisible isolation that many families in our community know all too well.
|
A support network doesn't have to be large. What it needs to be is real. Think in terms of layers: The Inner Circle: one or two people who can hear the hard stuff without flinching. They don't need to have the answers. They don't need to be able to fix the problem. They just need to be willing to show up, to listen, and to respect you and your journey.
|
The Practical Circle: people who can step in with tangible help, such as a meal during a crisis week, a ride to an appointment, a few hours of respite. This circle often surprises families. Your neighbors, church communities, or parents from school who are willing to help but won't know what you need until you ask. The Community of Understanding: other families who are walking a similar path. This may be the most powerful layer of all. When you're with people who truly get it, you don't have to explain yourself. You can breathe, cry, laugh, and just be who you are with no need to hide the blemishes. Family support groups, peer networks, and parent-to-parent connections remind caregivers that they are not alone and that things can get better.

Keto Cohort 2 Recruitment Begins! |
Enrollment for Cohort 2 of our Ketogenic Therapy Study has begun! Register your interest and find out how to be screened for participation! We are looking for families with children between the ages of 6 – 20 diagnosed with a mood disorder such as bipolar disorder, DMDD, depression, or other mental health conditions to participate in a study investigating the effects of ketogenic therapy on mental health.
|
This study includes a comprehensive program that supports parents and caregivers as they try metabolic therapy for their children. There is no cost to participate, so there’s no reason not to give this therapy a try. Participant families must be willing to change their diet, eliminate sugar, keep a daily food diary, monitor blood glucose and ketones, track mental health symptoms each day, and participate in weekly zoom sessions. If you have been thinking about trying ketogenic therapy for yourself or your child, this may be the perfect opportunity to have the critical extra support from the CMHRC Team.

This year we've asked 2,026 supporters to each give $26. Have you given yet? You may be wondering why we've made this ask. It's simple: There is power in a group of people who come together to make a difference, and small gifts from many people create real change. A one time gift or a recurring monthly gift of $26 will go further than you think.
|
Your gift will go directly to making our work providing psychoeducation, advocacy, and support to families and mental health professionals possible. |
It’s easy. It's quick. It's affordable. It matters. |
